创作灵感源于 Kevin Brockmeier 的一篇关于神秘陷入无声之城的短篇小说。凯文·布罗克迈尔（Kevin Brockmeier）的同名短篇小说里，一座城市莫名其妙沉默了整整一年。故事由一个神秘的“我们”来叙述，像古希腊戏剧里的歌队，语气古老，又像飘在半空。克里斯托弗·塞罗内（Christopher Cerrone）读完这篇小说后一直惦记着，却迟迟找不到用音乐去改编它的理由——小说本身的结构和气息已经很完整了。直到2020年春天，他坐在布鲁克林的公寓里，窗外是前所未有的寂静，只有救护车的笛声偶尔划过。翻出旧文件再看，小说里那个虚构的世界忽然变得很近。他找到指挥家泰迪·艾布拉姆斯（Teddy Abrams），两人决定把这篇故事搬上舞台。在配器上，塞罗内用预制钢琴、弦乐的刮奏和铜管的吹气声把整支乐队变成了一处声音的工地；打击乐自由演奏，去模仿远处摩尔斯电码似的声响。最难处理的反而是沉默——他最终没有把它写成一个音符都没有的真空，而是用温暖的持续音铺展开来，像一层声音的薄雾，把听众裹进小说里那种沉默之中。叙述部分由男低音歌唱家达尚·伯顿（Dashon Burton）担纲，他的声音既有歌唱的美感，也有说话时的沉厚质感。这部作品由路易斯维尔交响乐团（Louisville Symphony）委约创作，音乐总监泰迪·阿布拉姆斯(Teddy Abrams)执棒。
